- My hands-on and honest review of the SmartQ S7 Review by Pete-the-deal
-
Before purchasing the SmartQ S7 I had never used an andriod device before, and with no instructions in English, I knew it was going to be an interesting first few days. So after a few weeks of using my new friend, what have I learned about it. What's the good and not so good?Products Ratings
When the S7 first came out of the box, I must admit I was impressed. The front view was great - no buttons! Only 3 buttons on the top - on/off (standby), volume up and down - perfect. Nice arrangement of sockets on the right side, including hdmi out, and a nice textured finish on the back - no nasty finger marks.
Upon switching it on, it took around 55sec to load andriod. Don't know if this is good or bad. But when the screen came on and I unlocked it, I was again impressed, this time by the quality of the display. I could view it from any angle, and it was bright and crisp. It was one of the reasons I had chosen the S7, but I was still surprised at how good it was. The finger-tip response was also exceedingly good, and fast - no lag, even when I installed and played Temple run an Fruit ninja. Playing movies is also faultless and a pleasure to view, as is listening to my music library. Whatever video format I throw at it seems to play without any problems at all. Wi-fi works without even having to think about it, a seamless flow from tablet to ether and back again. Going online is also effortless, the only pauses caused by a slow internet connection. I can flick through my picture collections smoothly and effortlessly, my finger barely touching the screen.
I bought an ainol novo 7 aurora for my sons birthday, and I noticed that it can get quite warm pretty quick. Not so the S7 - seems to stay cool as can be whatever you ask it to do.
My S7 cost me £80 + postage, used not new. That had the advantage in that the v2 firmware was already installed. After searching the internet I found that all I had to do to extend the internal memory was to pop in my formatted 32gb, select smart storage from the menu, and move the andriod file to the sd card. That solved my storage problem, and it seems to work - well most of the time.
So it's a great looking tablet, with a great screen, and is reasonably fast with it's dual-core processor, and has a great memory capability, along with being put together really well, and it runs Andriod's ics 4.0.4. So is there anything bad about this baby from the east?
Not very much, I'd say. For some reason, very occasionally an app will fail to install because of "insufficient storage space", and sometimes an update will have the same problem and I will have uninstall and reinstall it again for it to work. Still trying to work that one out when I have 29gb spare.
The hdmi out doesn't work with my Toshiba tv! It works on my sons Samsung tv great, but I'm not going to swap.
The casing does creak a little. The ainol novo 7 aurora feels as solid as a rock, and some people may say its backside is a little sexier than the S7, but in my opinion, it's not as classy. The very slight creaking doesn't seem to do any harm, so I figure I can live with it.
All in all, I think the SmartQ S7 is an excellent tablet, designed and built to a very high standard. For all its minor failings, I still give it 5 stars, and I wouldn't swap it for an ainol novo or even a google nexus. And at half the price of the cheapest nexus, I think my little 7 inch baby was a real steal. (A new one will cost you a little more than mine did, but I think it's still worth it.) had no problems running multiple apps. The built in speaker is quite loud which is great for watching movies and listening to music. I'm impressed with the touch response from the display, much nicer than expected. I was nervous buying a tablet I have never seen, and one which was located across the world, but I am very impressed with the shipping speed and the quality of the device. It works, right out of the box. Seems like decent build quality. Unbelievably fast shipping (literally four days). Tablet is responsive and fast. Ships with wireless N. Speed tests show it the fastest device I own. Battery life is also very good. (Posted on 7/15/12)Products Ratings
